How long it will take to get the hang of your waist trainer and no longer feel discomfort depends on two main factors:

  1. The type of garment you have
  2. Your natural threshold

1.A The type of garment you have: Latex and Neoprene

With any type of garment, slowly but surely is our rule of thumb. However, those that are made of latex or neoprene have generally been easier to adjust to because of their elasticity and versatility.

When it comes to these materials, the suggested starting point would be no longer than two (2) consecutive hours per day. If you feel that this pace is easy enough, you may add another two hours later in the day, but make sure to give your body a bit of downtime in between.

As this progresses, you can prolong each session, we suggest in increments of an hour or two. If you go with the pace your body is comfortable with, you will be well on your way to a consistent routine.

1.B The type of garment you have: Steel-boned

Apart from latex and neoprene, the third most common material used in waist trainers are steel bones. These are essentially regarded as cinchers or corsets, and are mainly used for special occasions wherein you need to slip into body-hugging attire.

Because corsets have multiple steel bones embedded within the fabric, this will naturally be more challenging to adjust to. These offer extra compression, extra support, and make for a more intense routine, but give great, lasting results.

If this is the type of trainer you have, the average adjustment period is two (2) weeks. During this time, you may opt to fasten it all the way up but we recommend keeping it on a loose setting first, just enough to give your abdomen some room. Little by little, you may tighten it until your waist trainer fully takes form and you are comfortable with the constriction.

An important thing to note is that the flexible steel bones need time to adjust to your body’s natural curve, so tightening them right off the bat may end up damaging the garment.

  1. Your natural threshold

Everyone’s pain or discomfort threshold is different. For those that may have had some experience waist training in the past, or are just more inclined to perform physical activities, it may be more natural for your body to adjust.

There is no exact pace to follow, so long as you keep your health and safety a priority throughout your waist training routine.
